Free film festival to feature no films!

A film festival with a difference opens in Sunderland next Tuesday (November 7) – there are no films featured in it.

The International Flipbook Festival is at the University of Sunderland’s Vardy Gallery and offers hands-on experience of over one hundred flipbooks made by contemporary artists throughout Europe and North America. The festival is a celebration of hand-powered cinema.

The festival will launch in truly festive style on Tuesday from 6pm when visitors to the gallery can enjoy the new exhibition and also a live Mariachi Band, and a seven foot high chocolate fountain.

Visitors to the gallery can look through the flipbooks under the categories of live action, animation, experimental, and documentary. As in traditional film festivals The International Flipbook Festival will be awarding prizes in each category.

The festival will be at the Vardy Gallery until December 8, and then tour the USA in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York City and finally in Vancouver, Canada.

All Vardy Gallery events and exhibitions are FREE and open to the public.

Gallery hours are: Tuesday 10 am to 8 pm, Wednesday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday by appointment. For more information please call 0191 515 2128, email robert.blackson@sunderland.ac.uk or go to www.regvardygallery.org
