Coursebook
The coursebook used for FRE122 is The French Experience 1 (BBC Books). It is available from Blackwells bookshop (Chester Road) or else you can order the book directly from the online BBC Shop.
This is the same coursebook as that used by beginners. However, students on FRE122 begin at a higher level (unit 9) and progress further (unit 16).
French Timetable
FRE122 is a module that runs across both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Classes begin in late September/early October and end in late May. Two timeslots for FRE122 are available:
Monday 2.00-5.00 (2.00-3.00 in Forster 113, then 3.00-5.00 Forster 302)Wednesday 2.00-5.00 (2.00-3.00 in Forster 113, then 3.00-5.00 Forster 302)
Teaching Schedule
Classes begin in Week 2 of Semester 1 and end in Week 12 of Semester 2.
There is a Self-study week in each semester - Week 7 of Semester 1 and Week 5 of Semester 2 - to allow you to take a short breather and catch up on work.
A full breakdown of the teaching and assessment schedule is available in your online module guide.
Assessment of Module
Assessment of the module is through a mixture of two time-constrained assessments at the end of each semester each worth 30% of your overall module grade; one learning portfolio worth 20% and one mini project worth 20%.
Your tutor will provide you with information about both at the beginning of the module.
Web-based Resources for FRE122
We use the BBC coursebook because of its high quality materials including, increasingly, its online resources. You should go directly to the web site for the The French Experience 1. where you will find online versions of the units of your coursebook.
The WELL Project has an excellent page of resources for beginners too as well as sites suitable for intermediate learners.
There are some good search engines on our French Search Engines page that you can use to find helpful material.
You might also visit the ULS Links to Language Resources on the Web page. Worth visiting is our page on French Grammar.
Finally, as your French may be a little rusty, you may like to visit our FRE122 Revision page for explanations and exercises on revision topics.
