Coursebook
The coursebook used for FRE121 is The French Experience 1 (BBC Books). It is available from Blackwells bookshop (Chester Road) or else you can order the book directly from the online BBC Shop.
French Timetable
FRE121 runs in Semester 2 only. Only one timeslot for FRE121 is available:
Tuesday 2.00-5.00 (2.00-3.00 in Forster 113 then 3.00-4.00 in Forster 213, then 4.00-5.00 in Forster 201)
Teaching Schedule
Classes begin in Week 1 and end in Week 12. There is a Self-study week in Week 5 to allow you to take a short breather and catch up on work. Your Time-constrained Assignment takes place in Week 12.
A full breakdown of the teaching schedule is available in your online module guide.
Assessment of Module
Assessment of the module is through a mixture of one time-constrained assessment worth 60% of the module grade (weighting: speaking 15%, listening 15%, reading 15%, writing 7.5%, grammar 7.5%); one learning portfolio worth 20% and one mini-project worth 20%.
Your tutor will provide you with information about both at the beginning of the module.
Web-based Resources for FRE121We use the BBC coursebook because of its high quality materials including, increasingly, its online resources. Click here for its page of French resources. You might like to start with Talk French Online before progressing to The French Experience 1.
The WELL Project has an excellent page of resources for beginners too.
There are some good search engines on our French Search Engines page that you can use to find helpful material.
You might also visit the ULS Links to Language Resources on the Web page.
