FRE320: France between the Wars
Further Reading: General IntroductionsFRE320 is a Level 3 module and, as such, you are expected to read extensively in the target language (i.e. French), rather then relying primarily on resources in English. You should get to know the key historians associated with the different topics covered in the module, e.g. Michel Winock on the history of political ideas, Maurice Agulhon on Republicanism and the Third Republic, Pierre Milza and Phillippe Burrin on the Far Right in France, Ralph Schor and Gérard Noiriel on immigration and so on.
You should also familiarize yourselves with the key introductory works relevant to the module. Éditions du Seuil produce a very readable series on French history called 'histoire de la France contemporaine'. Volumes 12 and 13 cover the period under discussion in this module and are recommended purchases. Presses Universitaires de France (PUF) also publish an excellent series called 'Que sais-je' offering clear introductions to a range of relevant subjects. Jean-Paul Brunet, for example, who teaches history at the Université de Paris VIII, has published three very accessible works in this series on the Front Populaire, the history of socialism in France, and on the French Communist Party.
More detailed bibliographies are included at the end of each lecture.
