Upon successful completion of this module students will have:
learnt to relate cultural and intellectual developments to the social context and to the major events, issues and conflicts of the period; understood the impact on France of key political developments in Europe; developed an ability to present a coherent argument; researched relevant information from a range of English and French sources; further developed skills in manipulating ICT-based resources.
CONTENT SYNOPSIS:The module will analyse a key period of the Third Republic involving the study of history, politics, literature, thought and film of the of the period. The historical and political topics covered include: the Great War and its aftermath; immigration and the 'refugee crisis' of the 1930s; Right and Left in France including the growth of French fascisms and the creation of the Popular Front; Franco-German relations from Versailles to Munich; politics and intellectuals; modernism and avant-gardes; and the culture of the Popular Front.
TEACHING & LEARNING METHODS:
lectures (22 hours) seminars (11 hours) composed of textual analysis/commentary classes and Internet workshops 167 hours of directed self-study
ASSESSMENT METHODS:one 3,500 word essay (40%) one 3-hour exam (60%) at the end of the module comprising of one essay question (30%) and one textual commentary (30%)
