Links to immunology on the www

Immunology link sites

Why not explore the world wide web for immunological resources? The British Society for Immunology (BSI) is a good start and has it's own link page which is well worth a visit:

BSI home page

It is worth taking a look at the North East Immunology Club home page too (regional group of the BSI) - they run an excellent programme of monthly seminars which you are welcome to attend.

Another useful resource for Immunology on the Web is 'Immunology Link' - you can find information about other Immunological Societies, Immunology Journals, and useful databases including CD numbers, amongst other things!

The Immunology Link

The internet is an excellent tool to search databases. A very useful one is protein reviews on the web - essential if you ever need to know about a CD molecule or a range of other leukocyte surface molecules.

Another useful database is the cytokine on-line pathfinder Encyclopedia (COPE)

If you like things visual - then an excellent site to visit is

Cells alive index

There are lots of immunological images - look at the anatomy of a splinter, see how macrophages help lymphocytes make antibodies, or how a cytotoxic T lymphocyte kills infected or tumour cells.

There are many excellent text books to support your studies in Immunology. One of the recommended texts is Kuby Immunology (edited by Goldsby, Kindt, Osborne; published by WH Freeman)

If you want to translate abbrievations and acronyms - then help is at hand. You can access an on-line dictionary of pharmaceutical medicine.

If you are interested in Science on the web - then BioMedNet is for you. It is an internet community for biological and medical researchers. The content includes contemporary science, and immunology is well represented.

BioMedNet

HMS Beagle - the BioMedNet magazine.

There are many opportunities to search for references on the web. I have included some for you:

Pubmed / Medline

Web of Science (you will need to get a login and password from the librarian)

Ideal Online Library

You can even access the full text of some journals published by Academic Press, Churchill Livingstone, WB Saunders, Mosby and Bailliere Tindall.

Synergy

If you join the British Society for Immunology (only £15 for students!) - you also get on-line access to the full texts Immunology and Clinical & Experimental Immunology

For everything you ever wanted to know about antibodies, try -

Antibody resource page

Have a look in the educational resources section for some interesting reading. Another excellent web-site is:

Mike's Immunoglobulin Structure/Function Home Page

Or even, everything you ever wanted to know about viruses!

We even have some locally produced web sites that were developed by final year students to help you with some of the 'key skills' you need for your studies. These are not complete - but take a look, you may find help with dilutions, calculations and statistics...

Basic maths including decimals, units and dilutions.

Statistics made easy. Bear in mind that most biological data is parametric and that you will need to master the t-test first.

Table of units for easy conversion.

A few examples of common calculations in the lab

This is just a small list of what is out there - if you find any more particularly good sites that you think are useful / relevant - then press the 'Any Questions' button on the module home page and post a message. Share the information with your colleagues!!
